Hello All! I am a new nurse practitioner at a REI practice in SC. I was wondering if anyone could recommend sources for writing my protocols? And also, I have spoken to several different NPs in REI offices and it seems that the roles vary a lot. I was wondering what your experiences have been as an NP/if you are a nurse that works in an office with an NP? Do you see pts, coordinate IVF/Donor Egg, etc? I could appreciate any input anyone could give me!

Thanks
Abby

Hi Abby.
My name is Gwen and I am a Clinical Manager at a practice in Albany. I would be happy to share our experience with you regarding the role of mid-level providers. The types of visits that are common are: Consent reviews, new patient pt consults(same sex couples/straight IVF/Basic new non surgical), SHG, EBX, OB scans and consults.
It is not uncommon given the weekend rotation schedule that the mid levels would perform IUI's and morning clinic sonography.
They are also responsible for reviewing labs and seeing urgent visits such as a threatened OB or vaginitis. We have a separate donor coordinator who is a nurse but we do have a physical exam and post TVA exam visit that the PA or NP, as we have both, would perform as well.
Hope this helps you. I also have many policies completed if there is comething specific you would like I can see if I have it.

Hello Gwen- Thanks for posting all that. So your NPs will see new patients for IVF care? That is really great! How do the attendings in the group decide which Dr. therefore designates the plan of care, primary physician etc.

Joy-
Currently, we have just one MD so this makes it easy. However, we assigned the day in the past when we had another doctor. For example Tuesday new consults would have oversight by one MD but Wednesday would be assigned to the other.
We have had visitors from other centers in the past so I happily extend this offer to you as well. Let me know if you feel that this would help!

Hello Gwen! Sorry I have been MIA-- I didn't see much going on here for some time and hadn't thought to check back! Thank you for your invitation to visit.
I have recently changed positions and will be starting in a private practice as a NP, so I am very excited to see how it differs from my former academic practice.

Abbey-- Did you have any luck with your protocols?

Thanks for your postings! - Joy
